Kinet Höyük 7: The Medieval Period, Parts I and II
Speaker: Professor Scott Redford
Date & Time: 16 December, Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.
Location: ANAMED Library
How are migrations visible in the archaeological record? This talk examines this and other questions relating to the period of the Crusades (eleventh-fourteenth centuries CE) as viewed from the site of Kinet Höyük, Dörtyol, Hatay. Twenty years of Bilkent University excavations at Kinet uncovered remains of a medieval fortified settlement, a port known as Tinat in Arabic and Canamella in Crusader sources. How did the inhabitants of Kinet survive, even thrive, in the face of conflict occasioned by momentous events linked directly and indirectly to the Crusades?
Scott Redford is the Nasser D. Khalili Professor of Islamic Art and Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. His research focuses on the Medieval period in the regions of modern-day Turkey, the southern Caucasus, northern Mesopotamia, Syria, and Iran.
